PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus and a method in which an image can be accurately read while keeping high reliability. SOLUTION: After a light source is lit for a predetermined time synchronously with a relative position signal indicating a relative position while a reader which optically reads an image moves, control is performed to output an image signal corresponding to the image read by the reader in synchronism with a control signal for outputting the image signal.
