Relates to a pin and box coupling, wherein the pin 4 and the box 2 have co-operating tapering screw-threads at least one of which when unloaded deviates from a normal tapering thread such that when screwed-up hand-tight (Fig. 5) the threads contact at two points, planes B, D, over their length and when scewed or shrunk tight (Fig. 1), but without plastic deformation, of the opposing pairs of thread flanks between the contact points one pair on one side, say zone II, of a normal plane C between the points are the more heavily loaded and the other pair on the other side, say zone III, are the more heavily loaded. In such a coupling the pin and box are provided with co-operating internal or, as shown, external shoulders 6, 5, and to prevent clearance arising between the shoulders resulting in fatigue breakage due to wobbling under conditions of varying bending moment and great tensile force on the coupling a number of further thread turns are provided between the shoulders and the adjacent contact point, zone I, and are, in the hand-tight state, separated by a clearance, between one pair of parallel flanks, which gradually increases from said point of contact to the shoulders. Either the pin or box or both pin and box threads may deviate from normal tapping. Both external and internal shoulders may be used. As shown, the box thread is normal tapering and the pin thread deviates. In the tightenedup condition the box and the pin are not subject to axial stress in the plane B, the box and the pin respectively are subject to maximum tensile and compression stress in the plane C, and the loaded flank forces are designated K. The forces K in zones II and III balance, due allowance being made if anglesα, # in Fig. 1 are unequal, and the forces K in the zone I equal a shoulder force L which, if the shoulders 5, 6 are not normal to the axis, is an axial component of such force. The clearances between the unloaded or lightly loaded flanks may be greater than shown in Fig. 5, the calculated flank clearance for light loading when tightened being adhered to only, e.g. for improving gas or liquid sealing. Three embodiments include: starting from a constant crest (or root) pitch of the pin thread equal to the constant pitch of the normal box thread (Fig. 6, not shown); situating the pin thread crests (or roots) on the surface of a cone (Fig. 7, not shown); and arranging the root pitch of the pin thread constant but greater than the constant pitch of the normal box thread (Fig. 8, not shown).
