<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illuminator, etc. capable of reducing the reduction of illumination efficiency due to the alignment of the polarization direction of illuminating light. <P>SOLUTION: The illuminator has: a light source section 11R supplying light; a reflection type polarizing plate 15 as a polarizing and separating section separating the light from the light source section 11R into polarized light in a first vibration direction and polarized light in a second vibration direction approximately orthogonal to the first vibration direction; and a polarizing and converting section 16 converting the polarized light in the second vibration direction separated by the reflection type polarizing plate 15 into the polarized light in the first vibration direction. The polarized light in the first vibration direction separated by the reflection type polarizing plate 15 and the polarized light in the first vibration direction from the polarizing and converting section 16 enter the incident surface of a spatial light modulator 18R as an illuminated object from directions different from each other. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT</p> |
