PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sufficiently assure the write time of image data to a light valve even if the reduction of the luminescence time (decrease of display luminance) of a light source is suppressed. SOLUTION: The first and second light sources 11A, 11B are equipped with first light emitting means 14A, 14B which emit light having a first spectral characteristic, and second light emitting means 15A, 15B which emit light having a second spectral characteristic different from the first spectral characteristic. The first light emitting means 14A is equipped with a first set of a plurality of colors of light emitters 16A, 16B, and first mixed color light guiding members 17A, 17B for mixing the colors of the light from the plurality of colors of the light emitters, The second light emitting means 15 is equipped with a second set of a plurality of colors of light emitters 18A, 18B, and second mixed color light guiding members 19A, 19B for mixing the colors of the light from the plurality of colors of the light emitters. A light source driving unit 25 and an illumination light switching device 26 make the first light emitter and the second light emitter disposed in the first light source 11A and the second light emitters disposed in the second light source 11B emit light respectively at different timings.
