The invention relates to a cockpit crossmember assembly which comprises two structural crossmember elements (24, 26) in the form of bars held at their ends such that the assembly forms a rigid unit, the crossmember bars (24, 26) supporting a steering column and an air-conditioning unit (34). At least one portion of the air-conditioning unit, arranged between the two crossmember bars (24, 26), forms a tension- and compression-resistant reinforcement (40) whose two ends are each fastened (42, 44) to a respective bar (24, 26) in a tension- and compression-rigid manner. The reinforcement (40) comprises a portion of the body of the air-conditioning unit (34) that forms reinforcing ribs. The invention can be applied to motor vehicles.
