As shown, the fixing flanges 18, 19 are so disposed that, in clamping the diaphragm they set up a bending stress in the portion 16. When in its stress-relieved condition 23 (shown in broken lines) the angle a is greater than the angle #. Alternatively, Fig. 2, the diaphragm may be stressed upon installation by bending it from the position shown by broken lines to that shown by full lines so that compressive stresses are set up in zone 20<SP>1</SP>. In these arrangements during a braking operation, the diaphragm is acted upon by compressed air to move it with the plunger 10 from its rest position in the direction of arrow 21 to the position shown by broken lines 23. The diaphragm may be provided with a reinforcing insert 28 and the periphery in cross-section may be circular or flared and provided with sealing beads (29, 30, Fig. 2). |
