The invention provides dyeing assistants of the formula: Y-X-R-CN where R is C 1-3 alkylene; X is O, S or Se; Y is H, R-CN or a hydrocarbyl gp. which may be subst. by O, S, N, or optionally X-R-CN. The addition of these cpds. improves the brilliance of the colour and assists the application. The duration and temperature of the fixing process are reduced when these cpds. are present. The cpds. are obt. by reacting one or more moles of acrylonitrile, allyl cyanide, methacrylonitrile or crotononitrile with one mole of water or an alcohol, polyol, phenol, oxime, or a mole of H2S, mercaptan or thiophenol. |
