PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element having at least two light-emitting units in which drive voltage is low and light-emission efficiency is high. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element is provided with a cathode, an anode, and an intermediate unit 7 arranged between the cathode and the anode, a first light-emitting unit 5 arranged between the cathode and the intermediate unit 7, and a second light-emitting unit 6 arranged between the anode and the intermediate unit 7. The intermediate unit 7 has an electron extraction layer 1 to draw out electrons from an adjacent layer adjoining the cathode side and a plurality of electron injection and transporting units 2 provided adjacent to the anode side of the electron extraction layer 1. The electron injection and transporting units 2 are constructed of an electron injection layer 3 provided on the cathode side and an electron transporting layer 4 provided on the anode side.
