PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article state detecting device capable of detecting a state of an article carried in a state of being placed on a pallet, even when setting a plurality of kinds of pallets mutually different in the length in the carrying direction as a carrying object. SOLUTION: This article state detecting device detects the state of the article A placed on the pallet P placed and carried by a carrying means 1, and has an article existence detecting means 2 detecting whether or not the article A exists on the pallet P in a detecting action position in a carrying passage, a pallet existence detecting means 3 detecting whether or not the pallet P exists in a pallet detecting position in the carrying passage, and an arithmetic operation means 5 determining the forward projecting length of the article A projecting rather on the front side than the front end in the carrying direction of the pallet P and the backward projecting length of the article A projecting rather on the rear side than the rear end in the carrying direction of the pallet P on the basis of respective detecting information of a carrying distance detecting means 4 detecting a carrying distance.
