PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical scanner in which a high optical performance is available despite of a compact and simple structure and to obtain an image forming apparatus using the optical scanner. SOLUTION: The optical scanner has a deflecting means which deflects a luminous flux emitted form a light source means and a imaging optical system which focuses the luminous flux deflected with the deflecting means onto a face to be scanned, wherein the (formula 1): is satisfied, whereγstands for the incident angle of the luminous flux in a subscanning cross-section when the luminous flux from the light source means is made incident on the deflecting face of the deflecting means,βstands for the imaging magnitude of an imaging optical system in the subscanning direction, W (mm) stands for the luminous flux width in the main scanning direction of the luminous flux passing through the emitting face of an optical element closest to the face to be scanned in the imaging optical system andε(≠γ) stands for the angle between a plane of which the normal line is the rotation axis of the deflecting means and a straight line connecting the light beam position incident to the deflecting face of the deflecting means and the light beam position incident to the face to be scanned.
