A device for expanding storage capacity of a memory card and a memory card operating method using the same are provided to store large data over the storage capacity of a memory, which is combined during a manufacturing process, to the memory card by adding the memory to the memory card. A booting memory(233) stores a plurality of instruction sets. A memory identifier(238) extracts memory information from the added memory(250) and transfers the extracted memory information to a CPU(237). A memory controller(239) is set by the instruction set read from the booting memory according to control of the CPU to access the added memory. A host interface(231) provides an interface with a host(210). A buffer memory(235) temporarily stores transceived data through the host interface. The added memory is connected to the memory controller and the memory identifier through a socket, and the memory controller includes DMA(Direct Memory Access).
