An air conditioner and control method thereof are provided to reduce chattering noise due to refrigerant backflow in the cooling valve, and to reduce pressure difference between a high pressure section and a low pressure section of refrigerant cycle. An air conditioner and control method thereof comprises a compressor(122), an indoor unit, a mode change unit(160), refrigerant cycle, and a controller. The mode change unit has a cooling valve opened for cooling operation of the indoor unit, and a heating valve opened for heating operation of the indoor unit. The refrigerant cycle connects the compressor, the indoor unit, and the mode change unit. The hot gas bypass valve is arranged between suction and discharge sides. The controller controls pressure difference between a high pressure section of the refrigerant cycle and an outlet side of the indoor unit to be minimized by turning off the cooling valve at near turning-off timing of the hot gas bypass valve when converting the indoor unit from a cooling mode to a heating mode.
