1314213 Concentrating non-ferrous metals INTERNATIONAL NICKEL CO OF CANADA Ltd 23 June 1970 [23 June 1969] 30414/70 Heading C1A Sulphide, selenide, arsenide and telluride minerals of non-ferrous metals are concentrated by slurrying with at least an equal wt. of pyrrhotite, heating to 150-185‹ C. under a part pressure of O 2 of # 5 ats., at pH < 3, to oxidize pyrrhotite to Fe 2 O 3 and molten S which coats and collects the mineral, which is then separated from the slurry. The metal may be Ni, Cu, or Co and precious metals are also recovered in the concentrate. The pyrrhotite may be nickeli ferrous, and the slurry preferably contains 30-50% solids. The solids are preferably ground so that at least 50% passes a 325 mesh sieve (TSS) and not more than 15% is retained on 100 mesh. The product may be separated from the slurry by screening, followed by heating to remove S as liquid or vapour, or by solvent extraction. The slurry remaining after screening may be treated with H 2 S to recover metal sulphides, the resulting liquor being recycled.
|
