A latent heat storage tank has an outer mantle (1) around an inner pipe system (2) embedded within a chaotic interwoven matrix of twisted and curled material (3) that is a good conductor of heat. The tank further incorporates a mixer. The matrix has a roughened surface to promote the crystallization of salt hydrates. The matrix fibers are e.g. metal, carbon fiber, ceramic, or a combination of these.
