PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology for attaining improvement in throughput in a case any function of an option unit is not utilized, in an image reader mounted with an option unit. SOLUTION: In an image reader comprising an image reader main body and an option unit freely attachably and detachably mounted on the image reader main body, the image reader main body comprises an image reading means for reading the image of a document, a first conveying path for conveying the read document to the option unit, and a second conveying path for ejecting the read document out of the reader without passing it through the option unit. When a first mode is selected during which predetermined processing is applied by the option unit, the read document is introduced into the first conveying path and when a second mode is selected during which the read document is ejected out of the reader without applying the predetermined processing thereto, the read document is introduced into the second conveying path.
