PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bottom quality detector and bottom quality detecting method capable of detecting roughness without being affected by the hardness of sea bottom quality. SOLUTION: A sea bottom echo 43 received by a transducer comprises a head section 43b including a peak 43a and a tailing section 43c following it. A received signal X(i) where the tailing section 43c in the range of T1-T2 is A/D converted is normalized at the maximum value of the X(i), and the average value of the normalized X(i) is furthermore calculated. The average value is set as roughness indicating the degree of irregularity of the bottom quality. The T1 and T2 are calculated, based on receiving time T0 of the peak 43a, and the start angle and finish angle of a first side lobe. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
