PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a glass optical element by precision press molding, which allows both of high precision in the refractive index and high manufacturing efficiency. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the glass optical element, a glass optical element having a refractive index n3 is obtained by performing a press molding process including press molding of a glass workpiece softened by heating by using a mold and cooling of the mold, and then subjecting the molded body taken out of the mold to annealing for applying reheating and recooling. When the refractive index of a glass optical element, obtained by subjecting a glass workpiece having a first composition to the press molding process and the annealing, is defined as n2, and the refractive index of the glass having the first prescribed composition and subjected to a treatment under defined conditions is defined as a standard refractive index n1, the glass optical element is obtained by subjecting a glass workpiece having a second glass composition, which may have a refractive index n4 obtained by adding an amount corresponding to the difference between the standard refractive index n1 and the refractive index n2 to the refractive index n3 when it is treated under the defined conditions, to the press molding process and the annealing.
