The method involves activating a shutdown mode of a control device based on operating parameters, which define the operation of an electric motor (10). A power supply of a final stage (16) of the electric motor is ineffective to a drive during a faultless function of the control device, in the shutdown mode. The final stage is supplied with power for initiating the electric motor when the shutdown mode is activated, and the initiation of the motor is recognized as fault. An independent claim is also included for a checking facility for checking the function of a control device of an electric motor, which operates a gear.
