A display device and a control method thereof are provided to improve image quality by processing an image signal according to the kind of an external image display device. A display device includes a display unit, a connector(10), an authentication determining unit(30), a signal processor(50), and a controller(90). An external image device is connected to the connector. The authentication determining unit determines whether an authentication signal is included in an image signal received from the connector. The signal processor processes the image signal. The controller determines a process format for the image signal according to the determination result of the authentication determining unit and controls the signal processor, such that the image signal is processed corresponding to the determined process format.
