PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid detergent composition separable in two layers, having excellent detergency, as well as being excellent in external appearance because of good layer separation condition, and to provide a liquid detergent held in a container using the composition. SOLUTION: The liquid detergent composition comprises (a) 5-50 mass% of a nonionic surfactant, (b) 1-30 mass% of an anionic surfactant, (c) 1-20 mass% of an ampholytic surfactant and/or semipolar surfactant, and (c) 5-25 mass% of a polycarboxylic acid and/or its salt, and is separable into two layers at 20°C.
