METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR PROVIDING WIRELESS INSTANT MESSAGING SERVICE BY USING SHORT MESSAGING SERVICE

A method and a system for providing a wireless IM(Instant Messaging) service by using the SMS(Short Message Service) are provided to enable message transmission/reception between an IM client terminal and a mobile terminal in real time by converting an instant message, received from the IM client terminal, into a short message, transmitting it to the mobile terminal, converting a reply short message, received from the mobile terminal, into a reply instant message, and transmitting it to the IM client terminal. If the user of an IM client terminal inputs an instant message and destination address of the instant message(S200), the IM client terminal transmits the instant message to an IM server(S202). The IM server judges whether the destination address is an MDN(Mobile Directory Number) or an MIN(Mobile Identification Number)(S204). If so, the IM server transmits the instant message to an IM gateway(S208). Receiving the instant message, the IM gateway converts it into a short message(S210). Then, the IM gateway converts the IM client terminal user's instant message ID, inserted into source address field of the short message as a source address, into the MDN or MIN of the second mobile terminal, which the IM client terminal user possesses, adds an identification code to MDN or MIN of the second mobile terminal, and transmits the short message to an SMS server(S212-S216). The SMS server analyzes destination address of the short message and transmits it to a mobile terminal corresponding to the MDN or MIN inserted as the destination address(S218).
