摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel thiol compound, a modified ion exchange resin catalyst prepared by using the novel thiol compound having higher bisphenol selectivity than that of a prior art ion exchange resin catalyst, a method for preparing the same, and a method for preparing a bisphenol by causing a phenol and a ketone to react with each other in the presence of the modified ion exchange resin catalyst thus prepared. <P>SOLUTION: The thiol compound is represented by formula 1 wherein P represents a phosphorus atom; S represents a sulfur atom; H represents a hydrogen atom; R<SB>1</SB>represents a 1-6C alkylene group which may comprise a phenylene group in a part thereof; R<SB>2</SB>represents a 1-3C alkylene group; R<SB>3</SB>and R<SB>4</SB>each independently represents a 5-10C aryl group; and X<SP>-</SP>represents an anion. The modified ion exchange resin is prepared by modifying an ion exchange resin using at least one of the thiol compounds represented by formula 1.
