PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hair dye effective for restoring the springy or wavy hair generated at the tip of excessively damaged hair to the natural state, suppressing the generation of the springy or wavy hair, reducing the degradation of the feeling of the hair and uniformly dyeing the hair from the root to the tip. SOLUTION: The hair dye composition contains the components (A) to (C) and has a pH of 8-12. (A) An amide benzalkonium salt expressed by general formula (1) (R<SP>1</SP>is a 5-11C saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group; n is an integer of 2-4; and X<SP>-</SP>is halide ion, alkylsulfate ion or alkyl- or arylsulfonic acid ion), (B) an oxidizing agent and (C) toluene-2,5-diamine, p-aminophenol or their acid addition salts.
