The device has acceleration sensors (BS1, BS2) that are connected with a bumper lining in a fixed manner and coupled to a control device (SG). The sensors are provided for producing acceleration signals that are transmitted digitally to the control device. The control device is provided with a microcontroller for evaluation of the acceleration signals and for detecting the collision based on a periodic time of the signals. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting collision.
