PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader applicable to an individual authentication system, which can be suitably mounted on portable electronic equipment such as a cellular phone or a notebook computer, and attain high recognition rate or security performance. SOLUTION: In the image reader 100A, individual light sources (white LED 31 and infrared LED 32) which emit lights (white light and infrared light) differed in wavelength corresponding to fingerprint image reading operation and vein image reading operation are selectively switched and lighted, and reflected light or transmitted light incident on a double gate-type photosensor two-dimensionally aligned on a single sensor array 10 is detected, whereby a fingerprint image and a vein image are acquired from a finger FG placed on a detecting surface DTC.
