A floating ball bio-filter comprising a chamber, accommodating layers of balls floating in the water to be treated, each ball having staggered slots with bacteria deposited in them, the bacteria being selected to react with, and degrade, the impurities in the water to be treated passing through such slots; the balls in each layer having predetermined densities less than the density of the water, enabling them to float at predetermined levels in the water.
