The invention relates to the manufacture of easy-to-produce skullcaps with a low cost of manufacture. The invention utilizes a stretch material, e.g. precrumpled by forming more or less regular parallel longitudinal pin tucks or pleats. In one example of an embodiment, a strip of crepe paper is cut into pseudo-elliptical blanks. The general direction of the pleats 22 of each blank 20 is approximately parallel to its major axis b-b'. The blank is then placed on the top of the wearer's head and stretched by applying sufficient force transversely on either side of the major axis, so that the pleats open out transversely and the blank becomes an approximately spherical cap that conforms to the cranium of the wearer.
