A digital image processing apparatus and a method therefor are provided to offer image data corresponding to respective image display modes. An object is photographed. An image signal of the photographed object is converted into digital image data(S101,S103). The converted digital image data are compressed and stored as an image data file in which small-sized image data are included in the digital image data. The compressed image data file has a JPEG(Joint Photographic Expert Group) file format. Main image data and thumbnail image data are compressed in the compressed image data file.
