PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a genetically modified non-human mammal having artificially suppressed expression of Rbp-j gene in the differentiation process of pancreatic cell, a method for screening a pharmaceutical composition for the treatment or prevention of diseases caused by excessive secretion or deficient secretion of insulin; and also to provide a test method and a test agent for diseases caused by the deficient secretion of insulin. SOLUTION: A mouse having specific deletion of Rbp-j in the pancreas of developmental stage is prepared by using Cre/loxP DNA recombination system, and the character of the mouse is observed. The mouse exhibits typical characteristics of insulin-deficient diabetes accompanying pancreatic hypoplasia such as weight reduction, hyperglycemia, plasma insulin reduction and increase in intake (diabetic polyphagia), and it has been found that Rbp-j is necessary for the maintenance of pancreatic precursor cells and the formation of a proper amount of pancreaticβcells.
