PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress fluctuation of optical output power in cases where optical input power into an optical amplifier increases and where it decreases, in an optical amplification method by an automatic gain control. SOLUTION: The optical input/output power of the optical amplifier 3 is detected, a gain deviation between the gain of the optical amplifier 3 and a target gain based on the detected optical input/output power, a proportional calculation and an integration calculation are executed using the gain deviation and a control coefficient, and a control value for controlling a driving current of an excitation optical element 4 for exciting the optical amplifier 3. The gain of the optical amplifier 3 is controlled by electric control of the optical element 4 for excitation based on the control value of the calculated driving current, and the control coefficient is corrected on the basis of the calculated gain deviation.
