Oxide cathode production procedure where this cathoxide has an emitting layer and a carrier, on which the layer is applied. Before applying the emitting layer onto the carrier or a suitable part of the carrier, at least one film of a fine powder of a nickel compound is applied and this powder film is sintered in a reducing atmosphere. The powder can be nickel oxide, or a hydrated nickel compound such as NiCO3, nH2O or Ni(OH)2. A small amount of tungsten powder or tungsten oxide powder may be admixed.
