The method involves applying an engine characteristic map coordinate system with three different coordinate axes (2-6). Each coordinate axis is assigned a comfort characteristic. A comfort engine characteristics map (7) assigned to a vehicle seat is represented, where the map is defined by markings (10) on the coordinate axis. The comfort characteristic of the seat is detected and evaluated based on the representation of the map. An independent claim is also included for a method for optimizing the comfort characteristics of a vehicle seat.
