An apparatus and a method for controlling a brushless DC motor are provided to drive the DC motor by confining an upper limit value of an over-current according to operation states at a low temperature and a normal temperature. A method for controlling a brushless DC motor which confines a load current if the load current flowing on the brushless DC motor is more than a predetermined over-current upper limit value, includes the steps of: detecting a temperature of the brushless DC motor(S101); determining a temperature operation condition of a permanent magnet(S102) from the detected temperature; and differentially setting the over-current upper limit value according to the determined temperature operation condition. If the determined temperature operation condition is a low temperature operation condition, the upper limit value of the over-current is set to be lower than a normal value. If the detected temperature value is lower than a temperature value set for determining the low temperature operation condition, the operation condition is determined as the low temperature operation condition.
