A method and apparatus for inspecting objects using multi-energy radiation is disclosed. Said method comprises the following steps: using multi-energy radiation to produce interaction between said radiation and inspected objects; inspecting and recording the inspected values of radiation after interaction between various energy radiation and inspected objects; obtaining the primary information about material characteristic of inspected objects by substituting parts of inspected values into the predetermined calibrated function; estimating the further material characteristic of inspected objects by using appropriate function group of the energy zone corresponding to the primary information. The invention can inspect the large container cargo in custom, port and airport without opening the container.
