PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus which can provide satisfactory operability when reading an image corresponding to a part of a document of a size exceeding a maximum size among documents allowed to be read by the image reading apparatus while suppressing cost and the number of components. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus is constituted so as to form an image by extracting only an image corresponding to a partial area of a document set on a platen 2a, and the extracted area is optically indicated by illumination light outputted from a document press board 3 to the platen 2a.
