<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quicken memory access while performing error detection and correction by a single error correction means in an external storage device for continuously performing access to sector data. <P>SOLUTION: Sector data written by a host 2 are temporarily stored in a write buffer 7. When the sector data stored in the write buffer are odd-numbered sector data, a microprocessor 8 stores the sector data in a first memory 4, and when the sector data are even-numbered sector data, the microprocessor 8 stores the sector data in a second memory 5. When the host 2 reads the sector data, the Nth sector data to be read from the first memory are output to a system bus and the N+1th sector data read from the second memory (sector data to be read the next time by the host computer) are output to an error correction means by a data switching means 11.
