PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide rack and pinion type steering device equipped with a rack guide having high wear resistance capable of appropriately maintaining a meshing state of pinion teeth and rack teeth. SOLUTION: The rack guide 20 which is slidably stored in a cylindrical part 13a of a pinion housing 13 is pressed from a coil spring 21 toward the meshing direction, and the meshing state of the pinion teeth 11a with the rack teeth 12a is appropriately maintained. A DLC (diamond like carbon) coating film is formed on a circular arc shape surface 20a slidably contacting with a rack shaft 12 of the rack guide 20 and an outer peripheral surface 20d of the rack guide slidably contacting with the cylindrical part 13a of the pinion housing of the rack guide 20. The friction coefficient of the sliding contact surface of the rack guide with the rack shaft, and that of the sliding contact surface of the rack guide with the pinion housing are reduced by forming the DLC coating film to increase wear resistance and to suppress the occurrence the rattling sound.
