The invention relates to a smart card connector for accepting and arranging a smart card in a reading position. Said smart card comprises the following items: a contact support; at least one, preferably several, and particularly six reading contacts, each of which is provided with a contact cap for contacting a contact zone of the smart card and at least one triggering cap for swiveling the reading contact into the contacting position thereof with the contact zone of the smart card, each contact element being fitted with a connecting section to be fastened to the contact support; a carriage which is disposed so as be movable back and forth between a starting position and a final position in the contact support, said carriage encompassing reading contact-actuating means that can be made to engage with the triggering cap in such a way that the contact cap of the reading contact is pressed against the contact surface of the card that is to be contacted only shortly before the card reaches the reading position.
