PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a molding die for an optical element which can always keep such a state as to communicate a cavity inside with the surrounding atmosphere of the molding die when an optical material is arranged in the cavity between the upper and lower molding dies and which enables to make flow the gases in the cavity and of the surrounding atmosphere, and also to provide a molding method. SOLUTION: A pair of upper die 21 and lower die 22 of the molding die 20 for the optical material are fittingly and slidably inserted into a cylindrical body die 25, and a cavity 28 in which the optical material 29 is disposed is formed between the dies 21 and 22. The body die 25 comprises a plurality of dies which are disposed coaxially and fitted to each other mutually and rotatably around an axis, and the communicating holes 26 and 27 are formed so as to communicate the insides of the body dies 23 and 24 with the outsides thereof. Further, the molding die 20 is constituted so that the cavity 28 communicates with the outside of the outermost body die 24 by the mutual overlap of at least a part of the communicating holes 26 and 27 of the body dies 23 and 24 in an optional rotation position when rotating them mutually around the axis.
