PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording device and a control method for the recording device capable of properly correcting a recording position for performing recording on the circular disc-like material to be recorded such as CD-R by a simple constitution and a simple control and performing recording at an exact position of the material to be recorded. SOLUTION: In the control method for the recording device for performing recording on the material to be recorded, the recording device conveys a tray provided with a mounting part or a positioning part corresponding to a hole of the material to be recorded in order to mount the material to be recorded formed with the hole at a center. The device is provided with a reflection surface, i.e., a mirror surface of a predetermined reflection coefficient or more provided on the tray in order to detect the position of the tray. The device detects the position of the material to be recorded by detecting the light reflected by a means to be detected having a shape the width of which forms increase/decrease of a constant amount in a tray conveying direction and detecting the position of the means to be detected.
