An apparatus and a method for preventing discharge of a battery for a vehicle DVR(Digital Video Recorder) are provided to prevent the battery from being discharged by sending the DVR to a standby mode even when the main switch is turned off and the vehicle is stopped or parked for a long time. An apparatus for preventing discharge of a battery for a vehicle DVR includes a generator(1), a battery(2), a main switch(4), a DVR(7), and a power detecting apparatus(8). One end of the power detecting apparatus(8) is connected with the main switch(4), and the other end thereof is connected with a CPU in the DVR(7). The power detecting apparatus(8) detects whether the main switch(4) is turned on or off. When the power detecting apparatus(8) detects the off state of the main switch(4) and informs the state to the CPU, the DVR(7) enters a standby mode. In the standby mode, a storage unit of the DVR(7) is driven to record an abnormal part for a predetermined time only when detecting that abnormality is generated inside or outside of a vehicle through sensors installed inside and outside of the vehicle.
