PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that the operation just before switching ends just after switching by user's delay of visual checking or user's delay of operation in a device where a plurality of meanings are output by one input key, resulting in selection of undesired meanings. SOLUTION: The key input device 1 sets a plurality of meanings by the operation by one input key. Following determination section Hk to select meaning, the input device and its key input method are provided with both or either of the guard section Gk which outputs a meaning corresponding to the determination section Hk just before by setting operation performing the selection and the cancel section Ck where the transition procedure of the following determination section Hk can be canceled on the way, so that the setting of undesired information if delay occurs in setting operation can be avoided, and setting operation of a plurality of determination sections Hk which transit serially on the way of transition can be canceled.
