PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the transfer rate of a multi-chip line sensor. SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus comprises the multi-chip line sensor 200 having a plurality of line sensor chips in a line, a data transfer control device 200 for converting signals from odd-numbered line sensor chips into first digital signals and converting signals from even-numbered line sensor chips into second digital signals, a first storage part 210 for storing the first digital signals in order, and a second storage part 220 for storing the second digital signals in order. When the first digital signals stored in the first storage part reach half the number of semiconductor devices in the line sensor chips, the first digital signals are output from the first storage part in the storage order, and after all the first digital signals stored in the first storage part are output, the second digital signals are output from the second storage part in the storage order.
