PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an estimation mechanism of the expansion quantity of an indentor shaft, which more accurately estimates the effect of the thermal expansion of the indentor shaft, and also to provide a material testing machine. SOLUTION: The estimation mechanism for the expansion quantity of the indentor shaft 2 is equipped with: an ROM 73 for storing a temperature-expansion quantity data table 73a1 that shows the relation between the temperature and the expansion quantity of the penetrator shaft 2; a indentor shaft temperature detecting part 5 for detecting the temperature of the penetrator shaft 2; and a CPU 71 constituted so as to execute an estimation program 73b1 for estimating the expansion quantity of the indentor shaft 2 at the temperature of the penetrator shaft 2 detected by the indentor shaft temperature detecting part 5, from the relation between the temperature of the penetrator shaft 2 and the expansion quantity of the indentor shaft 2 stored in the temperature-expansion quantity data table 73a1.
