An apparatus for making up a jointed pipe with a threaded connection includes a pair of gripping members 110, 111 and a remotely operated latching mechanism for connecting the gripping members, the latching mechanism comprising two engageble latch members 120, 130 where a latch pin 140 can be used to secure the two members 120, 130 together and thus lock the latch closed. A latch cylinder 144 may be used to move the pin 140 in to and out of engagement with the two latch members 120, 130 and a switch may indicate when the latch members are aligned so that the latch pin 140 can inserted and lock the latch closed. The gripping members 110, 111 may be webbed straps and a hydraulic cylinder 60 may be used to tension the gripping members 110, 111 when the latch members 120, 130 are latched together. The apparatus may be hydraulically controlled from a remote console. |
