摘要 The invention relates to products of the formula: <FORM:0958830/C2/1> in which R is an alkyl (including cycloalkyl) radical of 1-20 carbon atoms, X is a sulphoxide or sulphonyl radical, Y is an anion and V is the valency of the anion Y. The compounds may be prepared (1) by reacting 1 mol. of the full sodium phenolate of a bis (p-alkylphenol) sulphoxide or sulphone with 2 mols. of a nickel halide in an anhydrous medium or (2) by reacting 1 mol. of the sulphoxide or sulphone with 2 mols. of a nickel salt of a weak acid. Examples are given of the manufacture of products from (1) the sodium phenolate of o,o1-bis (p-1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutylphenol) sulphone and nickel chloride, (2) o,o1-bis (p-1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutylphenol) sulphone (or sulphoxide) and nickel 2-ethylhexanoate. A number of other bis (p-alkylphenol) sulphoxides and sulphones which may be used as starting materials are specified, as also are a number of other compounds from which the anion Y may be derived. The products are useful for improving the fastness to light and the dyeing properties of polyethylene and stereo-regular polymers of olefines containing 3-6 carbon atoms, and for this purpose they may be used as such or in association with the known nickel phenolates of bis (p-alkylphenol) sulphoxides or sulphones containing only one atom of nickel per mol. of sulphoxide or sulphone, provided that the mixture contains at least 35% of a compound of the formula above. The products show a synergistic effect when used in association with phenolic compounds, and in this connection reference is made to their use in association with, inter alia, adducts of alkylphenols and cyclic terpenes or dihydroterpenes. Adducts of phenols and cyclic terpenes or dihydroterpenes are obtainable from phenol, or an alkylphenol containing 1 or 2 alkyl groups of up to 10 carbon atoms each, and a cyclic unsaturated terpene or dihydroterpene of the empirical formula C10H16 or C10H18. The reaction is effected at 0-150 DEG C. in the presence of an acidic catalyst, a number of which are specified, and 0.3-3 mols. of terpene or dihydroterpene per mol. of phenol or alkylphenol may be used. Specified terpenes or dihydroterpenes are carvomenthene, dipentane, a -pinene, a -terpinene, terpinolene, 2- and 3-menthene, dihydroterpinolene, dihydrodipentene, camphene, D 3-carene and b -pinene. A number of suitable phenols are also specified. The products are mixtures containing principally phenolic ethers and terpenylated phenols. The products may be used as such or in association with the known nickel phenolates of bis(p-alkyl-phenol) sulphoxides or sulphones containing only one atom of nickel per mol. of sulphoxide or sulphone, provided that the mixture contains at least 35% of a compound of the formula above. The products show a synergistic effect when used in association with phenolic compounds, and in this connection reference is made to their use in association with (1) polyalkylphenols, (2) alkylidene-bis(alkylphenols), (3) 2- or 4- (21-hydroxyphenyl)-2,2,4-polyalkylchromans, also definable as benzopyrans, (4) thiobisphenols and (5) adducts of alkylphenols and cyclic terpenes or dihydroterpenes. A number of compounds of each of these classes is specified. The compositions may also contain dilauryl thiodipropionate, dialkyl sulphides, zinc dialkyldithiocarbamates, zinc dialkyldithiophosphates, calcium soaps, organic phosphites, pigments, dyes, fillers and antistatic agents. Examples are given of the use of some of the products in polypropylene and polyethylene compositions. Specification 858,889 is referred to.
