[Also in Divisions C3 and C5] A toiletry or pharmaceutical composition for application to skin or appendages of the skin e.g. hair and nails comprises a dermatologically acceptable carrier and an emollient polymer of a heterocyclic N-vinyl monomer containing a group in the ring, in which polymer at least 25% of the monomeric units are alkylated with an alkyl or halogenated alkyl group or chain of at least 10 carbon atoms, the halogenated alkyl group or chain being chloroalkyl, fluoralkyl or chlorofluoralkyl. Exemplified compositions relate to cold cream, brushless shaving cream, hand lotion, vanishing cream, cleansing cream, emollient cream, quick-liquefying cream, paste rouge, lipstick, anti-perspirant stick, synthetic soap bar, sunscreen lotion, hair shampoo, nail polish remover, cuticle softener, bath talc, after-shave lotion, hair spray, hair-groom, hand cleaner and dentifrice. The usual carrier materials and other ingredients are also included in the exemplified compositions. The polymers may be used in pharmaceutical compositions for external use e.g. salves, ointments and suppositories containing conventional antiseptic, germicidal and medicinal agents and are particularly useful in ammoniated mercury ointment and compositions for the treatment of burns and haemorrhoids. |
