A method and an apparatus for generating a gamma voltage are provided to accurately select desired gamma data from a memory in consideration of panel characteristics of a display device. An apparatus for generating a gamma voltage includes a memory, a gamma voltage controller(60), and a gamma voltage unit(46). Plural gamma voltage data are stored on the memory. The gamma voltage controller compares one of the input gamma data, which is selected during a test image displaying process, with gamma data measured from the test image. The gamma voltage unit generates the gamma voltage by using one of the input gamma data according to whether the comparison result lies in a predetermined tolerance range.
