A reciprocating compressor is provided to prevent refrigerant compression in a moving element without any limitation in reciprocation motion of the moving element, thereby improving compressor efficiency. A reciprocating compressor includes a reciprocating motor(200) having a moving element(230) reciprocating straightly between inner and outer stators(220,210). A piston(320) is coupled with the moving element for reciprocating in the cylinder(310), and formed with a suction path(321) inside for guiding refrigerant into a compression space(311) of the cylinder, wherein a ventilation hole(322a) is formed in the center of the suction path in the radial direction to leak the refrigerant for smooth reciprocation motion of the piston. A valve(350) controls flow of the refrigerant to guide the refrigerant to the cylinder via the suction path of the piston.
