A method and an apparatus for managing audio files are provided to automatically collect, update, and analyze user preference information about the audio files and delete, compress, and manage the audio files on the basis of the user preference information. A codec(150) plays an audio file. An audio processing unit(160) outputs the played audio signal. A control unit(110) generates user preference information according to the play of the audio file, and stores and outputs the user preference information. A storing unit(170) stores the user preference information together with the audio file. An interface unit(140) downloads the audio file and transmits the user preference information.
